Local History of Port Hope Ontario
Port Hope, situated in Southern Ontario, Canada, lies approximately 109 km (68 mi) east of Toronto and 159 km (99 mi) west of Kingston. Positioned at the mouth of the Ganaraska River on Lake Ontario's north shore, it resides in the western part of Northumberland County. Notably, Trinity College School, a private institution, was established here in 1868.
Beyond the central town area, Port Hope encompasses several villages and hamlets, including Campbellcroft, Canton, Dale, Davidson's Corners (partially), Decker Hollow (now a ghost town), Elizabethville, Garden Hill, Knoxville, Morrish, Osaca, Perrytown, Port Britain, Rossmount (partially), Tinkerville, Thomstown, Welcome, Wesleyville, and Zion.
Traditionally, every April until 2020, Port Hope has celebrated the annual flood with the "Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny" ten-kilometer boat race. The event draws participants ranging from serious kayakers and canoeists navigating the swift, chilly waters to the whimsical 'crazy craft' paddlers, who fashion inventive vessels from assorted materials. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was canceled in 2020 and 2021, marking the first instances of such action in its history.
